Proverbs 18 by Ann

Prov 18:1 (NASB)  We are incredibly individualistic as Americans, and that bleeds far too heavily into our interactions within the church.  We separate ourselves regularly and then wonder why we cannot function as a body of believers should.  Each is out for his own desires to be fulfilled by the church family, and the sound wisdom of the unity  of Scripture presses against those desires.  So, the wisdom of God’s Word becomes unsavory to us and we fight against it.

Prov 18:2 (NASB)  As a result of those actions related to verse one, we all become a body of fools, each one wanting only to make himself heard.

Prov 18:19 (NASB) And all of that leads to this.  Because we are each caught up in ourselves, we easily offend one another.  The offenses and contentions put up barriers that can not be broken down.

Prov 18:10, 15 (NASB) There is hope in these words, though.  We are individualistic because we think depending only on ourselves and defending what we desire will give us security.  True security, however, lies in the Name of the Lord.  Even as it surrounds and guards us, it also breaks down walls and barriers that isolate us.  There is no disunity when we are all taking refuge in the Lord!  Meanwhile we gain knowledge, wisdom, and understanding directly from Him, and those tools enable us to grow personally and corporately, producing unity.
